Paleo Tracking


Photographing your food
It’s true!  Tracking your food consumption is the best kept secret weapon for weight loss but we’ve noticed that few of us choose to do this.  Why?  Time-consuming, boring and dull are frequent replies when we ask.  But watching what you eat really does help and it also becomes fun if you do it through a camera lens.

Taking a snapshot of each paleo meal replaces the laborious task of writing down everything you eat and crucially, not only does the picture provide a powerful visual documentation of unscheduled snack moments, it also triggers critical evaluation of what is being eaten at just the right time – the moment before the food is being consumed.  It brings us slap bang present with what we are doing, we are awake to the food and not on automatic pilot.  Now check out the colours smell and look of what is being eating and satiety levels also rise and that’s the power of now.

So put your camera phone to good use and snap quick shots of each meal.  Then download the photographs onto your computer and print them to make a journal or better still send them along to our facebook page and make yourself accountable.  We’d love to see what you are eating and to share our paleo journey with you.

About Us and our Paleo Diet


That’s me over there to the left of your screen – hi!

And here is a brief introduction to what we are doing different to you and how it is making a difference to us.

We are eating real food and we are living strong, healthy lives.  Radical.

We eat fresh, natural nutrient-dense food like fish, meat, bacon, vegetables, fruit and nuts.  This is not a diet in the sense of self-limitation or self-restriction.  We eat to maintain health and vigour and we are eating as much as we want to maintain a healthy body weight.  How about you?

We eat both plants and animals making a balanced nutrition rich diet and we take the carbohydrates we want from vegetables and fruits.  Fats like avocados and coconut oil, lard and olive oil provide us with energy and make food taste real like it used to like before our taste-buds got knocked out by sugar.

Eating like this helps to eliminate sugar cravings and give balance to body and mind.  Eating like this works to reduce our risk for most of the western life style related diseases such as diabetes type 2, alzheimers, heart disease and cancer.  How about you?

Checking into Paleo

That "fuzzy" feeling that kicks in (that Corey identifies) that's when we check out of life.  When we are living our life but not occupying the corners.  Corey's quote is from a series of inspirational slimming stories and highlights an interesting point which is  self-hypnosis; a primitive technique we all use when it's all getting too much.  It's this that makes our reality "fuzzy".

It's when we find ourselves staring at an empty packet of biscuits that we have eaten without tasting, without even noticing?  When we drive home, arriving at the front door with no idea how that happened?  It's a process of self-protection that affects us all.  Think of it as being like an automatic trance, a state of mind through which we experience life but like we are asleep.  Food can do this, tip us into our deeper mind.  Subtle isn’t it?   Corey nails it above though and anyone of us who has carried extra weight  will recognise this "fuzzy " reality. Our minds use automatic trances to give us a break enabling us to function while resting, it gives us a break when it's all getting a bit tough.  It becomes a problem though when these states keep us stuck in negative patterns of behaviour such that we don't see what we are doing.  

We don't connect and it's only after the food has gone that we come too and become aware.  Then it's too late.

Slipping into these states and checking out of life will not help us achieve our endgame.  The key as ever is to catch ourselves as we start to go into that deeper mind..  And the trick is to do something that we least expect.  

There is a moment before we start to go into that thought, a moment when we can break out of that "fuzzy" place,  a moment just before we check out.  In that single moment we can change.  We need to participate fully and do something to raise our awareness.  Try being physical and connect the inner us with the outer reality: star jumps, clapping, stamping, marching on the spot, talking out loud  anything to bring us back.

And get real.  It isn't easy that first time, we want to be in that place where we don't have to be responsible where we can momentarily give up but every time we connect, the process gets easier and we begin to grow.

Congratulations then to Corey for this realisation, for conquering his weight and for daring to grow into life and fill up the corners ;)  What are you going to do different today?

A Hot Fudge Sundae Life

Never underestimate the power of the mind, or a Hot Fudge Sundae for that matter and the grip of habit it can have in our lives!

Many of us have such contrary lives, working hard at jobs we can do but would not chose to do if we had such a choice.  We work long hours, commute hard and then hope to spend those few precious hours of choice remaining at the end of the day in some sort of peace with our loved ones.

How easy it is then to let habit and thought get in the way of diet and lifestyle and for self- sabotage to creep in and spoil our day.  That insidious thought that says we deserve a little something to make it better.  And it goes something like this: walking to work, downhill, half an hour’s brisk walking, and it’s cold, barely light and tiring and that before the work day has even started.   Walking now past the shops and the bakers has it’s light on, it’s busy inside: hustle and bustle, laughter.  And the smell of buns is good.  It brings with it a sense of love and comfort; bright, pretty icing colours and a moment of glory beckons as we eat the rich carrot cake and thick creamy icing, the sense of pleasure hurtling us toward oblivion.  We are checking out of our lives.

Like cigarette smokers and alcoholics know, this is addiction, likening the pleasure sequence generated eating fat with sugar as akin to the pleasure sense triggered by opiate abuse or cocaine addiction: and that is what you are up against particularly if the pattern of behaviour is entrenched.  But talk to anyone with food addiction and you will find that it is never about the food, it never is about the food.

For now, we are back outside that baker’s shop window and in that single moment we have a choice.  Buy it or not?  Walk past the window or go in?  And don’t think that willpower will get you through, willpower is an easily exhausted muscle that can use up its energy in simply walking to work downhill, going somewhere you don’t want to be, moving against your will.  So how do we get past this?

Let’s rewind this scene to early morning rising and try this.  When you rise make sure you eat breakfast within thirty minutes of exiting bed and make sure that your breakfast has at least 50–70 g of protein and fat and throw in some eggs for good measure.  You will know if you have the balance right later when you sail through work that morning not giving food a second thought.  If you are hungry again adjust your food on rising and try again.

And now when you walk past the bakers this morning, it’s easier because your tummy is satisfied with breakfast and the hunger has gone.  You become focused, pausing instead to look at the holiday destinations in Thompson’s window and noting this year they just might be in budget and the dress at Dorothy Perkins that brings with it the promise of going out tonight and the job adverts in the Post office window bringing with them the promise of change.  Lose that moment of short term gratification and you are looking ahead now and at possibilities and that's the difference. Don't compromise.  Create a way of eating that stops the cravings and you are mostly home.  It's the old 80/20 rule.  Get your body and it's mechanical processes working for you and it is everything else becomes much simpler, freeing you to find out what you want.

How to Eat

Most of us do not intend or expect to put on weight.

How does it happen?

There are lots of stories that accompany weight gain and we are often encouraged to share but none of them get to the root of the problem.

Which is actually this: we don't know how to eat to stay slim and maintain a healthy weight.

Think about it: when are we taught this most basic of skills?  At home, at school, by friends, by family?  It's a life skill after all but no-one shows us how to do it.

Who taught you?  Who is teaching the next generation how to eat healthy?

Bear in mind that the majority of information we receive about the food we eat comes directly from the people who sell it to us (fact not conspiracy)..and might not they have a vested interest in our food choices?

The situation is compounded by the confusion surrounding different diet plans: calorie restriction, high fibre, low fat, cabbage soup, eat eggs only (for real), grapefruit: surprisingly they all do work for a temporary fix becaue you are eating less and creating a structure and rules for a certain period of time but there in lies the problem: when we "finish" the diet, it really is all over and the weight inevitably creeps back on.  Can't think why the diet industry hasn't figured it out yet.....ah! repeat fees you say.....

Well, here's the good news: it's actually quite simple.  And there really is no need to invent a story as long as you remember this: our bodies work in a mechanical way.  Our bodies have evolved for one purpose only: survival.  Our digestive systems have evolved to extract the energy we need from plants and animals and distribute it to the cells in our body that use it as fuel to create energy.  It is a purely physiological process.  What we think or feel has zero bearing on what our bodies do with the food once we've eaten.  Our bodies want a consistent experience of good quality nutrient-dense food.  Make the job easy!

Prehistoric Footprints on Formby Beach, Liverpool

This place is great!

There’s a fierce wind that whips around the coast at Formby Point creating these immense and restless sand dunes.  Pinewoods shelter the coastline, the sun is bright and high.

This place shelters another secret….prehistoric footprints and it’s the draw of finding these that has pulled us out to explore with the children.

Clear, deep footprints in the mud on the beach look freshly made but these are the 10,000 year old tracks of hunter-gatherers chasing deer, wild boar and mighty aurochs.  Caught in a snap shot of their lives each print has baked hard under the sun and been covered by silt carried in by the tides until coastal erosion has caused them to re-appear.

It’s a glimpse of another world of those who have gone before: other children, women, men as they ran and played in the mud such a raw connection with our pre-historic past.  Makes us tingle all over, it’s a profoundly moving experience.

But eating a Paleo diet is not about re-enactment,  it’s about eating, truly living and exploring in today’s world.  Remembering our ancestors those who have lived before, remembering their strength and agility, acts like a compass or a guide in this our modern world.  When you shop at the store simply ask yourself this:  would our ancestors recognise this as food?  If the answer is no then ask yourself, should you?

Hunger or Sugar Addiction?




Do you think Joan Collins is struggling for cash at the moment?  Can’t think why else you’d take on promoting Snickers?

You can watch the advert above.  But to summarise, the story-line turns this bloke, a post-football match bloke (all matey-matey), into a ranting “Alexis Carrington”.  After a few quips his mate feeds him a Snickers (yes alright marathon) bar and “our hero” calms down changing back into “modern man” or rather the ad worlds’ idea of a modern man: washed, bearded, porky and great company down the boozer…puh-lease

The message is simple: unless you are stuffing your face with a Snickers, you’ll suffer a sugar crash and become a diva: so “get some nuts”! Ouch.

So what’s my point?

Some time ago we recommended a series of shows on BBC2 by Jacques Peretti on why we got fat which told us how the advertising world invented snacks.  Seriously. Go check it out.

Before the 1970’s there was no such concept as snacking.  No such idea of those frozen packaged black forest gateau-y cake things: they just didn’t exist.  Both of us remember Vesta curries coming into the UK with the raisins and in a box…progress, we thought!

But not everything is progress.  And what the ad men have got wrong in this advert is this, that man is not experiencing hunger which is defined as a feeling of discomfort or weakness caused by lack of food, couple with the desire to eat or a severe lack of food.

No, what he is experiencing is sugar with drawl.

Take a closer look next time you see this advert appear on TV and imagine you replace that “Snickers” bar with alcohol or heroin or crack cocaine.

Can you tell what it is yet?  Sugar cravings NOT hunger!  An addict chasing his next hit.

Now if we can see that in our own lives, we start to get somewhere…

The Future's Bright

We can spend our whole lives perfecting the art of improvement: faster, slimmer, fitter, blonder only to realise at the end of it that nothing has actually changed.

But using this dynamic, nothing ever will change at anything other than a temporary, superficial level and like the patched-up inner tube of a tyre, we discover that any temporary fix when pressure is applied, will rip open requiring further repair.  For example, we lose weight but this creates stress when our partner challenges our new look.  Stress makes us wobble and under pressure we start eating again.  And so it goes.

It’s because this approach misses the underlying dynamic that keeps the struggle for self-improvement in place. Change our approach, transform our strategy and we can finally experience permanent peace. We can resolve anything from this point.

For every problem, it seems that there is a future we have already written. And this future includes our assumptions, hopes, fears, perceptions “life lessons already learned” based on past experiences. We believe that there is something wrong with us that needs to be fixed.

We don’t talk about this future which is peculiar when we consider that the vast majority of us live from this point, live every waking moment as if this future is destined to occur. If someone pointed it out to us, we might challenge their view point, we might even get angry and we would deny that this future occurred. But what we have is a default setting, a filter through which we perceive things will occur. And that becomes our reality.

And it’s seldom great.

Recognise it? Look hard, it can be subtle but many of us live into that future as if it is our destiny unaware that by doing so we are making the outcome inevitable.

How does this relate to weight loss? It’s a personal challenge many of us struggle with time and again. Each time we commit to a new diet or exercise regime or admit we want help we say to ourselves: yes but this time it will be different. Only it isn’t and try as we might we fail. Why is this?

Because the answer to the problem lies in our future: sometimes winning sometimes losing but always struggling because that’s the shape of our future, pre-determined by our past experiences. So change your future!

How do we do this? By being aware of our past but choosing to live in the present. It takes practice but learning to apply techniques such as this to weight loss will bring about sustained success.

Eating a paleo diet is such a simple way of bringing us to awareness. As the emotional roller coaster in our minds that has been fuelled by sugar and processed food, calms through the new food choices we make, we give ourselves the best chance to secure lasting success.

Healthy Lifestyles: Just Walking the Dog


Watching out the window at work and I can see a family walking their dog.  There is a mum walking slowly with the aid of two sticks and three large teenage children all carrying surplus pounds and looking tight and uncomfortable.  

The dog is on the end of a long lead, one of those retractable ones (lead not dog).  They have chosen to walk him at the band stand - a tiny patch of green and when I say walk, one of the teenagers is standing in the middle of this pocket sized patch of green as the dog runs round in ever decreasing circles at the end of the lead. 

Maximum effort for the dog, minimum effort for the girl.  It makes me dizzy watching as the dog spins round and round.  Leaping, joyous, full of life and energy such a contrast to his owners now huddled together on the bench.  The small pocket-sized patch of grass surrounded by concrete seems such a metaphor for a life cut off, encircled and enclosed by fat.  

Why do we settle for this half life: is it learned helplessness?

When I was at my heaviest I despaired of ever breaking free of the cycle of overeating and weight gain.  It felt hopeless.  I ate as directed, round and round: low fat, fat-free, low sugar, sugar free no trans fats, 100% this, wholegrain that but the weight continued to pile on and at an alarming rate.  It took me years to realise that just because a food product says its good for you, doesn't mean it is!

The dietary advice out there is out there for all the wrong reasons.  We are educated by business and industry, by advertising and specifically a food industry that wants to drive forward its vested interests.  Do you think they have our best interests at heart?

Eat supportive, nutrient dense, real foods.  Look we eat beef, pork, bacon, chicken, seafood, eggs, green leafy vegetables, squash, avocados, tomatoes, vegetable salads, nuts, berries, cream, butter, cheese, olive oil, water, tea, coffee red wine, tequila and many more.  

We don't eat bread, cereal, pasta, grains, sugar, sweets, corn, beans, legumes, peanuts, processed food and anything with fructose added. The former are the foods included in the PaleoWorks Challenge (also known as a caveman or stone-age style diet).  And that's it, really.

The difference is remarkable but you will never know unless you try it for yourself!

Live Life Like a Mountain Gorilla!


Did you see the Horizon documentary last night on fasting?  Entitled "Eat, Fast and Live Longer", the presenter Michael Mosley explored the ancient science behind fasting as he set himself the challenge to live longer, stay younger, lose weight without  changing his lifestyle.

Interested?

You should be.  This is a very hot research topic in the battle against obesity related illness, diabetes 2, heart disease and cancer.  Get your critical thinking cap on and take a look!

This documentary reminds me of a man we know  who says we should  live  life like a mountain gorilla.  He tells a great story with it (which I have ignored) but his point is basically this: a mountain gorilla matures fast to adulthood and independence, lives a long healthy active life then dies gracefully at the end.

Humans in contrast, spend ages maturing (some much longer than others, some never getting there), live a life of dubious health and well-being and then spend ages getting old and dying.

Why do we do that?   Answers on a post card please...but seriously, it doesn't have to be like that!  The story is just an interesting reflection on the choices we make, on our habits of thinking and behaving.  But how do you see your future?

A Shorter Life versus the Perfect Body




What would you sacrifice for the perfect body? 
Well according to research at the Centre for Appearance Research (at the University of West England) 30% of students questioned on campus would trade one whole year of their life to achieve their ideal body weight and shape. 

 A further 26% would sacrifice £5000 from their annual salary, a promotion at work, spending time with their partner, family and friends and their health to achieve this ideal look. We think it’s much simpler than this.  And anyway why can’t we have both?  That is, why can’t we have the extra year and the £5000 and the promotion at work and the family and friends and the strong healthy body?  Experience has shown that Paleo does not do compromise.  This is real: real food, real life, real results.  Lasting results and that really is important.  

And I want a long and healthy life without compromise into old age.

Little and Often

This is a great question we received on Saturday......does eating little and often encourage fat loss or benefit your health?

Let’s cut to the chase: No!

This dietary “gem” relates to conventional dietary wisdom favoured by health and fitness establishments who suggest this eating little and often will help you keep your metabolism up and stoked and thus increase your fat burning possibilities.

Running alongside this dietary myth is the idea that if you eat less than once every three hours, your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolic rate slows down causing you to store more fat.  Kind of like a hibernating bear…..

Let’s review the science: our metabolic rate is determined by the energy required to keep our cells alive and functioning in good order.  This is our basal metabolic rate and remains at a constant level.  It will increase if we gain weight as we have more cells requiring energy but if our weight is constant then we will still burn this amount of calories throughout the day through existence and routine alone: not eating or eating does not affect that; it is simply the amount of calories that we require in homeostasis.

And not eating: does it slow down out metabolic rate?  The science says a definite “no” – for example, in a study putting people under starvation conditions for three days they saw no drop in metabolism and in fact saw a slight increase in metabolic rate after 36 hours of fasting (starvation)  and slightly higher again after 72 hours….

In another study at the Pennington Biomedical Research Centre, men and women who fasted every other day for a period of 22 days, experienced no decrease in their metabolic rate.

This confirms that our metabolic rate does not decrease at all when we don’t eat for three days and confirms that eating little and often to keep your metabolism up is not necessary as it doesn’t drop in the first place!

But you are right: so far we have only demonstrated that not eating does not slow our metabolism…what is the affect increased eating has on weight-loss: does it increase our metabolic rate and does it reduce muscle loss?

In a study using participants at a healthy body weight (BMI between 18 and 25), individuals were compared eating three meals a day with those eating one meal a day at the same calorie levels (although not focusing on calorie restriction) but instead at maintenance levels not intended to cause weight-loss (but to study the effects of decreased meal frequency) actually found that eating one meal a day decreased body fat levels by 1-2kg over the 8 week experimentation period.  There was no change in body fat for the three meal a day group.  The fact people lost body-fat from eating the same number of calories in a single sitting rather than across three meals shows that eating more frequently has no advantage.

In anther study using 16 obese individuals divided into two groups and comparing 6 meals a day against three meals a day with the same calorie consumption for 8 weeks found there was no difference in weight loss between the two groups and no signs of increased metabolism from the higher frequency meal group.  There was no difference in lean muscle preservation either, the muscle loss was exactly the same too: the hunger levels; and satiaty were similar showing that eating more often does nothing to improve the sensation of fullness.

Comments we have received on this subject illustrate the pitfalls of eating in this way: one client in particular confirmed what common sense would dictate: small meals are never enough and the opportunity to overeat is therefore ever present.  Another client remarked that this advice came from body builders – now wait a moment, surely a body builder’s objective is to bulk up and what’s your objective with fat loss……counter intuitive when you start thinking about it?  With no practical advantage to fat loss and a practice more akin to cattle, we urge you to quit grazing, go back to basics, heed the advice above (and Prince Charles)  and eat when hungry and stop when you are full.

Once again:  The little and often myth is busted!

Having Fun


The kitchen patio door is wide open…the front door is wide open …the breeze is blowing through and clearing the air, carrying the smell of tea cooking off and down the road.

Am waiting for Mike to come home, waiting to see him step through the door, kick off his shoes and drop his work pack.  Have prepared belly pork and coated the thick fat slices with ghee for good measure.  There are sweet potato chips roasting in coconut oil in the oven, cauliflower pieces in the steamer ready for mashing and fresh green cabbage on the top deck, a knob of French butter waiting to apply before serving.

 The air is still for a moment.

The rush of work gone, no traffic noises, no sound from the street: a simple expectant hush before the kids appear round the corner hungry and ready for tea.  And we can begin again.  Laughing, talking, catching up on the day.  And am struck again how clearing out the junk, that's  the processed foods, the grains, the sweets: how different life has become.  Simpler, stronger more direct.

Sometimes it feels that the movement away from the land that is the movement of food production away from the land has made our lives unnecessarily complicated.  What can be simple and direct becomes a minefield of over production, a drama.   There are  glimpses of this in the way we conducted and over complicated our pre-paleo life.  And it doesn't have to be like that.

What would we most like you to take from this?  That paleo is possible……..just do it, take the plunge, sit back and wait because you will find life turns in the most unexpected ways once you are clear enough to see.

Gatherer's Dream

Marsh Samphire.


Time was you would find marsh samphire chucked in with your piece of cod from the local fishmonger for Friday supper.  Time passes and nowadays you can find this beauty in your local superstore.  It's seasonal June through to September and at it's best around now.  And best of all it's free!

Samphire (or glasswort) grows freely in tidal zones on muddy sandy flats often around estuaries and tidal creeks.  We picked ours at salt marshes in Stiffkey in Norfolk; pinching out the top stems and finding ourselves rewarded with a fine salty delicacy with a delicious texture and satisfying crunch!  It looks like a baby cactus but without any prickly bits.  There is something rather wonderful about gathering in your own food.

Here's a paleo recipe you can try with your produce:

Samphire with Lemon, Butter and Olive Oil


Ingredients:

100-200 g marsh samphire per person
sea salt
ground black pepper
1 small knob butter
extra virgin olive oil
lemon wedges

Serve with crisp-skinned barbecued mackerel

Method:

Pick over the samphire, remove roots/tough stems

Wash, rinse thoroughly break-up larger multi-branched pieces.

Bring to boil a large pan of salted water

Drop in the samphire, cook for three to four minutes.

Drain.  Season with pepper.

Toss with butter and olive oil and serve with the mackerel.

Enjoy!  Prfect for a summer's day bar-b-cue and yes, it's Friday and the sun is finally out...

Paleo Works !


Why Paleo Works..what makes us different?

Simple...We believe that knowledge is key.

Before paleo hit mainstream there were already lots of negatives.  The food industry does not want you to learn about this, government does not want you to learn about this, your family and friends may not want you to know about this..

Why? 

Because it really works.  And for the food industry that’s a big no!.  Where is the money to be made from a diet that espouses simple basic real food?  No gimmicks, products, processed food with high industry mark-ups..are you beginning to see the pattern?

And for the diet industry too…because you  are going to stop needing their diet products, their pre-packaged meals and the next best exercise “secret” or food product.  Where’s the money in that? 

And for your family and friends?  Do you compete?  Are they scared you will succeed?  Are they worried about the changes they witness and the change in the friend relationship?  We wrote about the impact of sustained change here.  

But in the end it’s really only ever about you and me.  About learning to respect ourselves.

And what we know for sure at Paleo Works is this.  If you simply get told to do something, you will stick to it for a while and you will see results.  You will succeed, for a while.

That’s the problem.  After you stop getting told what to do, you start to rebel (it’s kind of human nature) and slowly your old habits will return.  Nothing fundamental has really changed, you see.

At Paleo Works, we know that when you understand how something works and why it will benefit you,  you will stick to it.  Actually, when you really understand, you won’t feel like you have to stick to anything.  You will simply drop the old habits and old beliefs and have moved into a whole lot simpler place.  This is empowering.  You become strong, centered, invincible.  Because you did it for yourself.
